The Unreal Engine is one of the most popular commercially-available game engines on the market today. Developed by Epic, the Unreal Engine has been around in some capacity since 1998. Currently, the engine is in it's 5th major version known as Unreal Engine 5.

While there are many different game engines on the market, Unreal is becoming the main engine for many larger studios. It's complex and mature nature means that it can accomplish many different workflows. It's blueprints system is great for giving programmatic access to non-developers and artists. Most importantly, engine development is expensive and time-consuming with many engines being proprietary meaning you need to train up new developers as the skills from other companies do not directly translate 1:1 and using Unreal allows for easier access to a wider pool of developers.

It's main competitors are Unity and Godot.

It has known issues with performance optimization with microstutters being a common complaint.
